Monarchy

Liechtenstein is a constitutional hereditary monarchy on a democratic and parliamentary basis. The power of the state is enshrined in the Prince and the people.
Reigning Prince Hans-Adam II succeeded his father, Reigning Prince Franz Josef II, in 1989. As Head of State, he may only exercise his powers of state in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws. For example, he represents the state vis-à-vis foreign countries, and he signs international treaties either in person or by delegating a representative.

In accordance with the Constitution, the people may exercise their rights through elections and popular votes.
